What we’re about.

At Kazoku Jiu Jitsu Academy, "kazoku" means more than just family, inspired by our Sensei Marcelo Balthazar - referencing our gym as we are “FAMILY”. It’s the way we train, support, and grow together. Founder and Head Coach, Alexandre Tsukamoto is half Japanese and half Brazilian. Rooted in the traditions of Japanese martial arts and shaped by modern Jiu Jitsu culture, our academy is built on discipline, respect, and connection.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

Here are the questions we get asked most. If there's something else you want to know, come in for your free week or send us a message.

Do I need any experience to start?
No. Most people who start with us have never trained before. Our classes cover the basics first, so beginners and experienced students train side by side. Just show up and we'll teach you the rest.
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes. Your first week is free. You can train as many classes as you like that week, with no obligation to join. It's the best way to see if the gym is right for you. Book your free week →
What should I wear and bring to my first class?
Just wear comfortable workout clothes, like shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. You don't need your own gi to start, and we can lend you one for Gi classes. When you buy your own, note that we train in white gis only. Bring a water bottle too. Check the timetable for Gi and No-Gi classes.
Do I need to be fit to start?
No. You'll get fitter as you train. Everyone works at their own pace, and your fitness, strength and flexibility improve the more you come in.
Is jiu-jitsu safe?
Yes. Classes are run in a controlled way with a focus on technique, and everyone looks out for their training partners. You always train at a level that suits you, and when someone taps, we stop straight away.
What ages do you take for kids?
We run a kids program and group them by age and skill so they train with the right partners. It's great for building their confidence, discipline and focus. Get in touch and we'll let you know the best class for your child.
How much does membership cost?
We have options for adults, kids, casual drop-ins and families. There are no sign-up fees and no exit fees. You can see all the prices on our Membership page.
Is there a lock-in contract?
It's up to you. Our Standard membership has no lock-in and you can cancel any time. Our Premium option is a 3-month membership at a lower weekly rate if you're ready to commit. Either way, you can pause your membership for up to 8 weeks when you need to.
What are your class times?
You'll find the full weekly schedule for adults and kids on our Timetable page.
Where are you located?
We're at Unit 1/15 Lake St, Varsity Lakes, on the Gold Coast. Come by and say hello.
Is there parking?
Yes, we have parking on site, so it's easy to get to training.

Still have a question?
